Comics, Cosplay & Irish Meet Up?!

Getting my mojo back!

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month, so I’ve decide today that I will be open about some of my struggles recently. I’ve been finding it incredibly hard to find any kind of motivation, even in regards to the things I am passionate about. I have been making YouTube videos for over eight years now, and while it has been such a wonderful experience for me, it’s also been a constant struggle. A struggle to stay motivated and to stay true to myself.

I’ve come to terms with the fact I will never be a “big” YouTuber but the lack of change or channel growth can sometimes be incredibly disheartening. I’ve realised that I need to stop trying to fit in on YouTube, and online in general, for that matter. I need to start allowing myself to have fun again and stop desperately trying to fit the mold. It never works and it is never fun.

I have always felt like I need to be one thing, have one genre of content and focus solely on that. Although to me, that is just so boring. I get that it is great for continuity but, it’s just not me. I get bored easily and I like to express myself in different ways. So why hold back on that?

Life is too damn short to limit myself.

Which is why I am no longer uploading videos on a tight schedule, I am uploading content, only when I feel inspired to share something with the world and when I have something to say. I have been having impromptu cosplay photo shoots (see photo above), recording videos when a light bulb of inspiration goes off in my mind, and in general, having fun being creative again.

Taking the pressure off myself to “keep up with the Joneses” is really sparking a new found passion within me. There is nothing more stifling than creating something, for the sake of it.

It’s time to get back to basics and just have fun.

Because its obvious when someone is passionate about something. That in itself, is inspiring.

DIY Jessica Jones Cosplay

Today I put together an impromptu Jessica Jones cosplay, using some items I had lying around the house. People always ask me if it is hard to put together a cosplay from scratch, and the answer is yes & no. It depends on the character you want to portray. Jessica Jones is a great example of a character that is simple enough to create, just using make up and clothes you may already have.

I am a big fan of the Jessica Jones Netflix series and love her no-apologies sense of humor and bad ass attitude. Her style is quite similar to mine, which is why I had a lot of the clothing items already. The good news is, a lot of the clothes she wears are simple and easy to find in thrift shops or in affordable clothing stores, such as Pennys/Primark. Alternatively, for an even cheaper (not to mention, minimalist) option, consider borrowing some items from friends or family, if possible.

For a DIY Jessica Jones cosplay, you will need:

  • Dark hair or wig (my wig is from ebay!)
  • A grey scarf
  • A leather jacket
  • Black fingerless gloves
  • Light blue jeans (not pictured)
  • Black boots (not pictured)
  • A fake or real camera (to be used as a prop)
  • Optional: Fake wounds or cuts (for added effect!)

Oh, and having resting bitch face also helps a lot! Jessica Jones takes no shit from anyone.

And there you have it my friends, a easy and affordable Jessica Jones cosplay.

You’ll be the baddest bitch in Hells Kitchen in no time!

How to cosplay as Lara Croft

There’s no doubt that Lara Croft – the main character of the Tomb Raider franchise – is a true legendary action hero. We’ve seen her overcome insurmountable odds with nothing more than her wits and pistols. When her character was rebooted in Tomb Raider in 2013, she was still a badass despite the fact that she had almost zero hand-to-hand combat skills during her search for the lost kingdom of Yamatai.

Over the years, Tomb Raider has become a benchmark for successful video games. After the success of the original Tomb Raider game in 1996, numerous spinoffs were created in Lara Croft’s honor, with the most recent being Lara Croft Go – a 3D mobile game for puzzle fans. Her massive popularity also allowed her franchise to branch out past traditional consoles and into pay-to-play gaming with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, a stand-alone title being offered on the gaming site Pocket Fruity. No matter the genre, Tomb Raider excels, which only goes to shows how serious the franchise’s game developers are in keeping it a benchmark for others to aspire to be as good as.

Apart from being a badass in her games, the character has also become a national symbol for female empowerment, which is why many girls who go to comic cons cosplay as her. Cosplaying Lara Croft is easy as she only uses clothes that can be readily bought in boutiques. If you’re thinking about cosplaying this awesome femme fatale, here’s an easy cosplay guide that was focuses on her Angel of Darkness costume:

1. You need a black-colored tank top. Shorten the top by folding it or cutting it.
2. For her shorts, you need a pair of green camouflage ones that are turned up at the bottom with a black belt. Then, strap gun holsters to each of your legs.
3. For your footwear, you need brown-colored boots. Wear them with long, rolled-down white socks.
4. Lara wears a ponytail in Angel of Darkness. Her hair color is brown so either use a wig or dye your hair temporarily, whichever is more convenient.
5. For the gloves, you need to find black ones. If the gloves cover the entire hand, cut the gloves so your fingers show.
6. Wear a small, black backpack.
7. Lara’s make up isn’t difficult to do given the fact that she doesn’t wear a lot. Make sure to use natural-looking make up, and a lipstick that’s a bit darker than your natural skin tone.
8. Finally, wear some black-tinted sunglasses.

That’s it! Follow these easy steps and you’ll be killing it in your Lara Croft cosplay at any future comic con or party!

Happy cosplaying!

A little update.

Hello lovely reader,

It’s been a while. The last written blog I posted on here was published in July and I wanted to write this post, to explain to you where I have been and why I have been neglecting my blog over the past few months. Honestly, a lot has been going on. I have had a lot of setbacks and a some little victories, but most of all I have been trying to find my footing in the blogging world.

As some of you know, I have recently changed the direction of my YouTube channel. I started making videos where I give my social commentary on issues that are going on in the world. I have always been a very opinionated person and for a long time, I was feeling unhappy with the content that I posted on YouTube. If I am being totally candid here, I can admit to you that my channel wasn’t doing so well and I was no longer enjoying the content I was creating. It wasn’t enough for me. Don’t get me wrong, I still absolutely love fashion and beauty but they are not the only topics I want to talk about anymore.

I needed to shake things up and I did. I’m glad I did.

My channel is doing much better now and I feel excited to make videos again. That is not to say that I won’t be posting beauty, hair or story-time related videos ever again. I will! I still do. My channel is going to be a mixed bag, it is going to be a mishmash of my interests, personality and life. I have also been thinking a lot about how I can keep my old and new audience happy, and I think I have discovered a way to do just that! I’m going to use my blog to house a large majority of my beauty reviews, hair posts and fashion blogs, etc.

In fact all of my content will be posted here on this site, my videos and my blogs. There are different categories on my blog (check the top, right-hand corner of my site) to choose from and it’ll be a one-stop-shop for all of my content to be viewed and (hopefully) enjoyed.

So if you only enjoy my social commentary or geeky related content you can find it easily. Or, you are a fan of my beauty, hair & fashion content, you can find all of it on one page, at the click of a button. It will be a fully fledged lifestyle blog and I really hope you enjoy it.

I hope that EllieJayden.com can become something different for everyone. A hub of advice, opinions and information. I’m currently working on some new blog posts and hope to get back on track with everything as soon as possible. I’m excited about it and I hope you will be too!

Stay tuned for new content and thanks for sticking around 🙂

XO
