Pretty in Pastel OOTD

Last night I attended the Irish Beauty Blog Awards 2016 in Dublin city. I wore a dressy casual outfit and *shock! horror!* I actually wore colours. That’s right! I stepped away from my usual uniform of all black clothing to try something different from a change. Summer is all about wearing bright colours so I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and wear an all-colour outfit for once.

I have always been drawn to pretty pastel colours and I really enjoyed wearing this combination of baby pink and baby blue shades together, paired with some light grey jeans. I kept my accessories simple by just wearing a beautiful statement hairband that really completed my look for the night.

The Biggest Trends of S/S 2016

Brighter, braver and bolder than ever! Spring/Summer 2016 style takes us back to our nostalgic years and encourages us to take a step out of our comfort zone and try new things. The days are finally getting longer, the nights are getting brighter and the seasons are changing and so should our wardrobes.

Get ready to embrace these beautiful changes and allow yourself to be captivated by the metamorphosis of this seasons latest trends. With a diverse mixture of retro stylings, bursts of bright colours and artistic cuts, now is the time to let the new you out. Experiment with fashion, express yourself through style and fall in love with this season’s biggest trends.

Graphic Stipes & Architectural Prints

A trend that is set to take over summer fashion is graphic stripes. Fashion houses like Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney and Jonathan Saunders all featured striped clothing in their S/S collections. Zig-zag and horizontal patterns were a huge part of Dolce & Gabbana’s S/S 2016 runway shows. Their fabulous collections featured clothing with romantic nautical stylings and nods to retro holiday fashion, each clothing item created with bold coloured fabrics such as rich reds, bright yellows and 50’s inspired silhouettes to create an eye catching and versatile look for any occasion. Graphic handbags are a great way to incorporate this trend into your summer wardrobe, bold and dramatically striped hand bags can really make a simple outfit pop.

Other renowned fashion houses like Dior decided to take a more modern approach to this funky trend by creating prints with wider, more graphic stripes and layered shades to really drive home this high impact look. As well as been incredibly on trend, stripes are also timeless. They were not only popular in the 50’s and 60’s but also in the 90’s grunge era by music lovers and rock stars alike. There are so many ways to wear stripes to suit your own personal style, you can mix and match them with other striped prints or wear them with simple pieces such as a classic white shirt or trousers. Try wearing stripes with one of your favourite bold colours if you are really feeling brave this season.

Reinventing our youth

Speaking of grunge, it seems the 90’s are well and truly back in style! Alexander Wang, Chloe and Saint Laurent all took a stand in their S/S 2016 fashion shows to bring this classic style back into 2016 fashion with a fresher approach. Saint Laurent’s menswear collection is heavily inspired by grunge bands from the 90’s and the iconic and late Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain. Male models were styled wearing plaid shirts, denim, eccentrically patterned jackets and white sunglasses. Saint Laurent also took inspiration from the era by paying tribute to famous 90s fashionistas such as Kate Moss and Courtney Love, by styling their models in sparkling sequined dresses, tiaras, oversized jackets and silky slip dresses. That’s right, slip dresses. Wearing underwear as outerwear has been tipped as a lead concept for SS16 fashion. Slinky chiffon dresses trimmed with feminine lace was a key part of the Celine and Saint Laurent S/S collections.

This year’s summer fashion trends are inviting us back to our glory days, allowing us to resurface old trends and revitalise them by incorporation modern pieces to our looks. So if you are looking for a fashion forward jacket to wear this summer, make it a bomber jacket! Whether you opt for a minimalist leather zip-up or an eye catching statement print, the bomber jacket is the perfect jacket for summer. Made famous by films like Vanilla Sky and Grease, bomber jackets have been spotted recently on the likes of supermodels like Gigi Hadid, Karli Kloss and Kendall Jenner, meaning the classic jacket is well and truly back in style this season.

High Shine Fabrics

A great way to take your look to the next level this season is to take inspiration from spring and summer elements such as light and bright colours and incorporate them into your style. Fashion designer JW Anderson reflected this beautifully (pardon the pun!) in this summer collection by using high-shine fabrics, reflective clothing and embellished sweaters with broken mirror pieces.

Spring/Summer fashion is all about having fun and letting your personality shine. If wearing extreme fabrics isn’t your thing, wearing sequinned fabrics is a fantastic way to pull this look off without going too far outside of your comfort zone. Fashion houses Lanvin and Calvin Klein styled sequined dresses and long sequinned coats along with simple monochrome pieces to create a sophisticated yet stylish looks for their summer collections.

Embellished Handbags & Luxe Sportswear

No matter what styles you choose to embrace this season, make sure you to focus on statement pieces. They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend but any fashionista will tell you that a good handbag can help you pull off almost any look and complete almost any outfit.

Whether you are a lover of vintage satchels or the classic clutch take a note from designers such as Marc Jacobs, Fendi and Versace, who each included beautifully crafted embellished and DIY inspired handbags in their summer collections. Have some fun styling embellished handbags with your summer looks, the more eye-catching the better! You can even get creative and style your own handbag with patches, beads, badges and other unique embellishments. If handbags are not your thing then fear not because embellished backpacks are also going to be huge this season. Backpacks aren’t just for kids anymore, this dressy-casual trend introduces elements of high fashion and sportswear together to create a stylish, modern take on the classic backpack silhouette.

Summer is a time for change and renewal in all aspects of life, so why should it be any different when it comes to your wardrobe? Whether you decided to wear artistic prints, brighter colours or take inspiration from times gone by, make sure you are having fun with fashion this season. Let your creative side take over. Express yourself this summer!

Autumn/Winter 2016 beauty trends & backstage looks

What is the best way to discover what the next big beauty trends are going to be? By looking at the backstage glam at some of the biggest fashion shows on the planet of course! Here’s a look at some of the best beauty looks to come from the Autumn/Winter fashion 2016 fashion shows.

Burberry – Glitter

Wendy Rowe, makeup artist at Burberry went for a glittery grunge inspired look by smudging kohl eyeliner into the lash line and then sprinkled glitter from the outer corners of the models’ eyes to create a beautifully haunting look. Then hairstylist Sam McKnight styled the model’s hair to look like it was slept-in/night before hair, using natural texture to create the messy glam look.

Alexander McQueen – Grunge

Lucia Pieroni created a soft focus effect on the models eyes by using a grey/black khol eyeliner, smudging the liner all the way from the outer corners to the inner corners to create a soft, grungey effect. Hairstylist Guido Palau added some glamour to the grungey look but adoring models messy up-do’s with jewelled hair clips and vintage style brooches.

Topshop Unique – 70s Rock Goddess

With makeup by Hannah Murray, models for Topshop sported heavy eyeliner and striking lips, in both bold magenta and nude lip colours. Anthony Turner styled the hair into soft, side-swept waves and Nancy Sinatra inspired curls. The entire look reminds me of Lana Del Rey! Love it.

Ralph Lauren – The ‘No Makeup’ Look

Ralph Lauren had a ‘no makeup’ look for A/W 2016, with their models wearing makeup that enchanced their natural beauty. This look focuses mainly on creating an even skin tone and long eyelashes. Guido Palau created loose, natural hairstyles to compliment the minimalist makeup.

Rodrate – Fairy Nymph

With makeup by James Kaliardos, Rodarte created a gothic inspired look, using deep burgundy shades on the lips and glowing, highlighted skin. Metallic eyeshadow was also used to create a mystical effect. Hairstylist Odile Gilbert styled the model’s hair in loose waves and chignons, he pinned in woven flowers and used metal headbands to complete the hauntingly beautiful looks.

The Blonds NYFW Fall 2016 Alice In Wonderland Themed Show

This week Fashion design duo The Blonds, unveiled their Fall/Winter 2016 collection at New York Fashion Week. Designer Phillipe Blond and creative director David Blond put on a show to remember at Milk Studios in NYC. The breathtaking show was inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

And it wouldn’t be a Blonds show without insane bejeweled looks and unique hair!

“Imagine if Alice in Wonderland was directed by Tarantino or Gregg Araki,” said David Blond, creative director and one of half of The Blonds duo. Another important aspect of any Blonds show, is the nail art. The nails created for this particular fashion show, took 900 hours to create! “The nails are an integral part of our overall story,” Phillipe has said. With such emphisis on the nails, it is clear as to why the Blonds work with CND when putting together each collection.

Their stunning Fall 2016 collection consisted of dramatic jewel-encrusted corsets and eccentric gowns, sequin puffer jackets and pantsuits, and bedazzled over-sized sweatshirts. The models were styled with pink and white dreadlocks and matching, soft pastel eye make up, with a dramatic red lip. It’s safe to say the Blonds attention to styling and details is always impeccable!

The clothing and the show itself, remind me a lot of Gwen Stefani’s music video for her song What You Waiting For? Which isn’t a bad thing in my opinion. I really loved that entire era for Gwen and these outfits are right up my street in regards to style and taste. I love anything that is sparkly and a bit out there. I am always excited to see what The Blonds do next, their fashion shows take me to another world, inspire me to take more risks with my style &  make me excited about fashion!

Advanced Style: Embrace Yourself & Your Style Journey

I’ve come to realize something very important over the past few years, wisdom can only be obtained through experience and age. When I was younger I used to think I knew everything and I can now look back at my teenage years and see them for what they were, a huge learning curve.

I often looked in the mirror and hated what I saw, I disliked a lot of my physical features as well as being critical of who I was as a person. Recently, during a deep conversation I had with a friend, I began to think about my life and my journey towards self confidence. One of the reasons I started my YouTube channel, was to put myself out there, gain confidence and to become more creative.

Over the years I have slowly gained confidence in myself and my style, I love playing around with different looks and ideas. I think style should be fun! It is self expression at it’s finest and it gives people a glimpse into your soul, who you are and what you are about.

Style can be learned and it is important to educate yourself about different fashion eras, designers, pop culture and many different aspects of the fashion world. To me, the most important and inspiring people in fashion, are the every day fashionistas, the women on the streets who live for fashion. There is something captivating about seeing regular people on the streets, showcasing themselves to the world through their wardrobe choices. It’s art.

In a world of social media and blogging, it is easier than ever to gain fashion inspiration at your fingertips. One of my favorite style blogs is Advanced Style, a blog that celebrates fashionable older women and their eclectic fashion collections. This blog has changed my life, it revolutionised how I think about fashion and style. It’s truly one of the greatest style blog I’ve ever laid eyes on.

I strongly urge anyone who is reading this to check out the Advanced Style documentary on Netflix, it is a a magnificent film that interviews many of the ladies who feature regularly on the blog. A lot of these women have gone on the feature in many prestigious fashion campaigns and some of them have become the faces of some of the worlds biggest fashion houses. It’s empowering, it makes me want to be just like them when I get older.

Getting older really is a privilege, it’s something to embrace also. I want to continue to embrace who I am and what it is I want to say to the world while I am still alive and these magnificent women inspired that in me. I no longer look at age as just a number or something to despair over, I look at it as an opportunity to continue to learn about myself and others.

There is power in style and there is power in women, so when you combine the two, you create a force to be reckoned with. These women are inspirational and I admire the fact that they don’t let their age stop them from experimenting with their style, even as they get older. It can be easy to give in to what is expected of you in today’s world but these women embrace who they are, it’s the ultimate act of rebellion in a society obsessed with youth and conforming to social norms.

If you want to wear something that other people might not be in to or admire, that is their problem. Wouldn’t it be so boring if we all dressed the same or followed the same trends?

The ethos of the Advanced Style blog and film, is to be yourself and never let anyone else tell you how to dress. The film inspired me to embrace the development of my style and not to take everything so seriously! The older I get, the less I care about what people think of me. Life is too short to worry about what others might think of my colourful hair or some wacky items of clothing I love to wear. If people laugh at me for these things, who cares? If they get a kick out of it or it makes them laugh, awesome. What other people think of me is none of my business!

Steal Her Style: Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has been taking the world by storm since appearing in season three of Orange Is The New Black, as the mysteriously beautiful, Stella Carlin. Not to mention she is the face of Maybelline New York in her native Australia. Her career began when she entered a model search in Girlfriend Magazine in 2002, since then she’s become a popular DJ, model, actress & crush of the century.

The androgynous model is gender fluid and plays around with masculine and feminine aspects of her style, to create her stunningly unique look. I love the contrasts in her style, she has a way of mixing girly and urban clothing together perfectly, which suits her fun loving personality so well.

Ruby Rose is incredibly versatile. Her personal style combines a unique mix of feminine and masculine cuts and prints, to give her the edgy and stylish look she’s famous for. I love that Ruby isn’t afraid to experiment with her look & takes a lot of fun risks with her style. She loves to wear loud patterns and bright colours, wearing fun urban inspired clothing with designer pieces.

Accessories are a huge part of Ruby’s look, she is usually always wearing chunky gold necklaces and large watches. One of her signature fashion items is a funky baseball cap, which she usually pairs with a long vest top to show off her tattoos. Her tattoos up’s her style game even more!

As a world famous model, Ruby knows her makeup game has to be strong and boy, is it! She keeps her makeup simple and has fantastic bone structure, which makes her a makeup artists dream. To get Ruby’s look, apply a concealer and foundation to perfect the base of your look, use a highlighter on your brow bone and cheeks to give your face a natural glow and lift.

Eyebrows are a very important aspect of Ruby’s look, define and shape your eyebrows using a brow kit and applying a rusty brown eye shadow along your top lid and lower lid, blend it out to create a sexy, smokey look. Brown eye shadow really makes Ruby’s gorgeous blue eye’s pop!

On her lips, Ruby usually keeps it simple by wearing a nude coloured lipstick or a pretty rose shade, which compliments her lightly tanned skin tone. Sometimes she opts for a classic bright, bold red lip and keeps her eye makeup simple by wearing mascara and black eyeliner.

And last but not least, the most important aspect of her pulling off Ruby Roses’s edgy look, the hair! Her androgynous, short hair compliments her stunning features, she loves playing around with different hair styles and head shaving designs. If you’re brave enough to try out Ruby’s edgy look, just know that it’s only hair and it will grow back! And hey, you only live once.

Fashion has no gender.

Recently, Jaden Smith has been spotted wearing dresses that he purchased while shopping in Topshop and the internet went crazy. Some people were supportive and others were not.

Jaden posted another picture of himself on social media wearing a dress with the caption:

“Went To TopShop To Buy Some Girl Clothes, I Mean, Clothes.”

He was spotted at Coachella this weekend, wearing a flower crown and I must admit, he looked damn good! Why do we freak out when a male wears a pretty dress but not even bat an eyelid when a woman wears something that is considered masculine. Such as a pair of baggy jeans or a slouchy hoodie?

I’ll tell you why. It is because of society.

We’ve conditioned ourselves to automatically segregate ourselves into specific boxes, to fit social norms and gender norms. We do this completely unknowns to ourselves most of the time. I think it is time we broke out of those boxes and finally freed ourselves creatively. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to freely express ourselves through fashion, without the restrictions of gender norms?

It is up to us to express ourselves through our style choices, not societies expectations of us.

What I love about Jaden Smith is his complete lack of fucks given in these photos. This kid doesn’t give a shit about what society expects him to wear, he wore a dress because he wanted to. I think it would be fantastic if more people adopted this same mindset.

Quite a few people have stopped me in the street to say “I love your hair, I wish I had the nerve to do something like that to mine!”.  The sad truth is, we let the expectations of society hold us back from doing a lot of things in life. One of the reasons I love fashion so much, is because it allows me to express myself to the world in a way that is both instantly and creatively satisfying to me.

I think Jaden Smith is awesome. He is only Sixteen years old and is already more self confident and creatively free than most adults I know. I think we could all take a leaf out of his book and try new things, push outside of our normal comfortzone’s and question societies norms.

Steal Her Style: Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey describes her personal style as ‘Gangster Nancy Sinatra’. Her look incorporates both retro and modern styles to create a look that is her own. She looks like a Beauty Queen Rebel, pairing leather jackets with wide, volumized hair styles that are sure to make an impact when she walks into a room. Lana is a fan of simplicity when it comes to clothing, she likes to wear timeless fabrics, such as lace, velvet and chiffon. She knows how to play with feminine and masculine textures to create her look and compliments her features with clever accessorizing.

Lana’s look is unique in the fact that she wears high end couture pieces with gangster inspired jewelry. She add’s a modern twist to old Hollywood glamour with her accessorize. Her favorite accessories include gold two finger rings, chunky gold necklaces and hoop earrings. She adds a touch of femininity to her look by wearing flower crowns and 60’s inspired hair bows.

Lana’s hair and make-up are a very important part of her look. Volume is very important when trying to re-create Lana’s hair styles. Taking inspiration from Nancy Sinatra, Lana usually wears her hair high and wide in a beehive up-do. Her hair always has shine and texture, which can be created using volumizing hair products and a shine spray. Her main focus in regards to make-up are her eyes and her lips. Her famous bee stung pout is can be recreated using a nude lip liner and lipstick. If you try this look, make sure to use a lip primer to keep your lips looking kissable!

She creates more drama to her look by focusing on making her eyes look as doll like as possible. This is done using a light brown eye shadow on the crease of the eye lid and by lining her eyelids with liquid liner. Definition is created using a jet black mascara to define the lashes. To add some extra definition to the eyes, try using some fake lashes to create that Jessica Rabbit inspired look.

She truly is a beauty queen, living the American dream.

10 Emotional Stages of Cleaning Out Your Closet.

As you stand with your hands on your hips and stare into the abyss that is your closet, just remember that you’ve done something most people haven’t the courage to do, you’ve taken the first step. Give yourself a pat on the back, put your ipod on shuffle and let’s get to work!

Cleaning out your closet can be a big deal.

A lot of emotions that are going to arise as you search through old items of clothing. You are going to have long, serious debates with yourself. You’re going to wonder why you ever wore certain items and worst of all, you are going to convince yourself you need to keep items that are no longer of any use to you. Nor are they in style in this century, let alone this season.

Let’s face it, there are many emotional stages to cleaning out your closet…

1. You’re enthusiastic and ready for action, you’ve got your bin bags ready. LET’S GO!

2. You’ve put your favorite song on in the background, everything’s going great!

3.  You find a dress you don’t even remember buying & it’s really, really ugly.

4. You toss it away because you definitely will never be wearing it again!

5. But wait…. what if there is a perfect occasion to wear it again?

What if it comes back into style?

6. You take it out of the bin bag and add it to your “keep” pile.

But let’s face it, you know you’ll never wear it again.

7. You decide all of this is just TOO much and take a coffee/wine break to re-group.

8. You procrastinate about finishing what you’ve started.

9. But no, you MUST carry on. You can do this! WARGGGHHHH!

10. Once you’ve finished, you feel so much satisfaction, you got rid of 3 tops!

YAAYYY! You did it! Well done. *flops onto bed in exhaustion*
